Iron in well water: how to remove it? The complete guide to iron removal systems (2026)
We are introducing this model to the CzystyStyl offer. Ask about availability, and we will select the media for your water analysis.
Multifunctional systems: iron, manganese, and hardness in one column
A multifunctional system works differently than an iron removal system with aeration. It does not oxidize iron, but only removes it in dissolved form: Fe²⁺ and Mn²⁺ ions are bound in the ion-exchange media, similar to calcium and magnesium responsible for limescale. In mixtures such as ECOMIX (five components, including two patented ones), additional layers bind the ammonium ion and some organic substances. When the media becomes saturated, the controller starts salt regeneration: salt displaces the trapped ions from the media, and rinsing flushes them into the sewer.
This principle has two practical consequences. First, the system uses tablet salt and water for regeneration, but in return, it softens the water. Second, water before the system is usually not aerated, because iron precipitated earlier contaminates the ion-exchange media. According to the manufacturer, ECOMIX media can handle water with hardness up to 750 mg/l CaCO₃, iron up to 15 mg/l, manganese up to 3 mg/l, ammonium ion up to 4 mg/l, and oxidizability up to 20 mg/l O₂. These are the limits of the media itself: the allowable parameters of a specific system are provided by its product card.
For well water, we offer, among others, Ecosoft Core Gold (ECOMIX A, water with a moderate amount of organic compounds), Ecosoft Titanium Gold (ECOMIX C, water with a large amount of organic compounds), Klarwod CS ECOMULTI with ECOMIX media, as well as Aquaphor S550, S800, and S1000 systems, which according to the manufacturer remove iron and manganese up to 10 mg/l. You can find a comparison of parameters in Chapter 8.
6. Water iron removal methods: comparison
Aeration with filtration on catalytic media is the most popular method in homes with wells, but not the only one. Below is a comparison of methods used in Poland along with their limitations.
| Method | How it works | When it makes sense | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical filter (sedimentation) | Traps sand, silt, and already precipitated rust | Protects the installation and iron removal system from sand | Does not remove dissolved Fe²⁺; a too-dense cartridge clogs quickly |
| Aeration in the device + filter media | Oxygen from the air (air cushion in the column or injector) oxidizes iron, and the media traps the sediment; MnO₂ catalytic media accelerate the reaction. Water rinsing | Iron and manganese in a home with a well, without salt and chemical dosing (Supreme OXYLINE, Ecowater eXPERT Oxy 700); Supreme OXYLINE also reduces hydrogen sulfide | Requires an efficient pump and drain; works less effectively on iron bound with organics |
| External aeration + filter | A compressor or aerator aerates the water in the pressure tank or contact tank, the filter traps the sediment | Very high iron, larger installations | More devices and service; requires a flow-through pressure tank |
| Catalytic media without aeration (e.g., Birm) | Uses oxygen already present in the water | Water with sufficient dissolved oxygen and pH from about 6.8 | Deep water usually lacks oxygen; removes manganese poorly at lower pH |
| Chemical oxidation + filtration | A dosing pump supplies sodium hypochlorite, potassium permanganate, or hydrogen peroxide, the media traps the sediment (e.g., Greensand-type) | Very high iron, organic iron, iron bacteria, strong hydrogen sulfide | Purchase and control of chemicals, contact tank, sometimes dechlorination with activated carbon |
| Multifunctional system (ECOMIX and similar) | Ion exchange and sorption, salt regeneration | Iron and manganese together with hardness, ammonium ion, and organics | Salt consumption, model limits; water should not be aerated beforehand |
| Regular softener | Resin exchanges calcium and magnesium, and incidentally some Fe²⁺ | Trace amounts of dissolved iron | Resin becomes "ironed" and loses capacity; does not replace an iron removal system |
| Reverse osmosis | The membrane traps dissolved substances at one point of use | Water for drinking and cooking after an iron removal system | Does not protect the installation; with high iron, the membrane clogs quickly |
| Polyphosphates | Keep iron in solution, do not remove it | Temporarily at low concentrations | Iron remains in the water and may precipitate, e.g., after heating |
| Magnetic and "electronic" devices | No proven mechanism for iron removal | – | Do not remove iron from water and will not replace an iron removal system |
7. Iron removal system or multifunctional system? Selection based on results
The table organizes the decision, but does not replace the selection of a specific model. It shows which technologies to start with for a given analysis result.
| Results / situation | What to consider | What to watch out for? |
|---|---|---|
| Elevated iron, little manganese, hardness within normal range, pH from 6.8 | Supreme OXYLINE or OXYLINE PLUS | Pump capacity during rinsing, minimum pressure of 2.5 bar |
| Iron with slightly acidic water (pH 5.8–6.8) | Supreme OXYLINE PLUS (media operating range pH 5.8–10.0) | At low pH, manganese is harder to remove than iron |
| Iron and manganese, larger home, need for remote monitoring | Ecowater eXPERT Oxy 700 with media selected for the analysis or a larger OXYLINE PLUS model | eXPERT Oxy 700: max. 5.5 bar and about 2.2 m³/h for rinsing |
| Iron and manganese and hard water | Multifunctional system or an iron removal system, followed by a softener | Limits of the given model, salt consumption |
| Iron with ammonium ion or high oxidizability, immediately yellowish color | Ecosoft Titanium Gold (ECOMIX C) or a multi-stage system | Not all media remove organics and ammonia |
| Rotten egg odor (hydrogen sulfide) | OXYLINE with more frequent air exchange or Aquaphor P1 with KDF85 | The H₂S concentration must be known before selection |
| Very high iron, iron bacteria, unstable parameters | Individual system: chemical oxidation, contact tank, disinfection | Design based on a full analysis |
| Only hot water is yellow | First diagnose the heater, anode, and pipes | An iron removal system may not remove the cause |
When the problem is iron and manganese, and hardness does not require correction. Without salt and without chemical dosing. Consider Supreme OXYLINE or Ecowater eXPERT Oxy 700.
When hardness, iron, and manganese need to be reduced simultaneously, and the parameters fit within the system limits. Consider Ecosoft Core Gold or Titanium Gold, Klarwod CS ECOMULTI, or Aquaphor S550/S800/S1000.
When there is a lot of iron, and the water is also hard. Each column works under its optimal conditions. See water softeners.
Important: do not choose a device solely based on the iron concentration or the number of residents. Data on maximum simultaneous water consumption, pump capacity, pressure tank type, and the possibility of draining backwash water are also needed for selection.
8. Iron removal systems and systems in the CzystyStyl offer: parameters and differences
Below we have gathered data from manufacturer data sheets. When comparing, distinguish the device series from its size: two columns with similar media volume may have completely different pump requirements.
Supreme OXYLINE and OXYLINE PLUS
| Model | Media | Nominal / max. flow | Rinse pump* | Media operating pH |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OXYLINE 28 | 28.3 l | 1.1 / 1.8 m³/h | 1.5 m³/h | 6.8–9.0 |
| OXYLINE 42 | 42.45 l | 1.4 / 2.1 m³/h | 2.2 m³/h | 6.8–9.0 |
| OXYLINE 56 | 56.6 l | 1.6 / 2.3 m³/h | 2.5 m³/h | 6.8–9.0 |
| OXYLINE28 PLUS | 28.3 l | 1.1 / 1.8 m³/h | 1.2 m³/h | 5.8–10.0 |
| OXYLINE42 PLUS | 42.45 l | 1.4 / 2.1 m³/h | 1.8 m³/h | 5.8–10.0 |
| OXYLINE56 PLUS | 56.6 l | 1.6 / 2.3 m³/h | 2.1 m³/h | 5.8–10.0 |
| OXYLINE85 PLUS | 84.5 l | 1.9 / 3.0 m³/h | 2.5 m³/h | 5.8–10.0 |
| OXYLINE113 PLUS | 113 l | 2.5 / 3.5 m³/h | 3.2 m³/h | 5.8–10.0 |
*Approximate data from the Supreme technical data sheet; performance depends on operating conditions and water quality. The pump must provide the required flow during flushing at the actual system resistance, which is not the same as the pump's rated capacity. Models with a link are available in the store; the rest are being added to our offer, ask about the delivery date.
Common parameters for the entire series: operating pressure 2.5–8.6 bar, operating temperature 4–43 °C, 230 V power supply, 1" BSP female thread connection, electronic time-volume control. Optionally available are a bypass valve and a 360° angled connection, which makes installation in a cramped boiler room easier.
What does the table show? With the same bed volume and rated flow, the PLUS series requires about 15–20% less water for flushing than OXYLINE (e.g., 1.8 instead of 2.2 m³/h for a 42.45 l bed). It also has a wider bed operating pH range (5.8–10.0 compared to 6.8–9.0), which is useful for slightly acidic water, but does not replace the need for an analysis: at low pH, manganese is harder to remove than iron. For a home with one bathroom, a rated flow of 1.1–1.4 m³/h is usually sufficient. With two bathrooms and simultaneous use, it is better to aim for 1.6 m³/h or more.

The Core Gold series replaced the earlier Ecosoft Anthracite Gold stations. How does Core Gold differ from Titanium Gold? The type of bed. ECOMIX A in Core Gold is designed for typical well water. ECOMIX C in Titanium Gold better removes organic compounds (humic substances), which are natural substances from soil and peat that color water yellow or brown. Such water is usually easy to recognize: it is yellowish immediately after pouring, not just after settling. As a result of testing, this is seen as elevated oxidizability (above 5 mg/l O₂) or color. According to the manufacturer, ECOMIX C reduces the amount of these compounds by about 80%, and ECOMIX A by about 50%. If the water is yellowish immediately after pouring or the oxidizability exceeds 5 mg/l O₂, choose Titanium Gold. In other cases, Core Gold is sufficient. You will find all models in the multifunctional stations category.
9. What does the well water treatment scheme look like?
There is no single scheme for every well. A typical installation with a separate iron remover looks like this:
- Well, pump, and pressure tank, diaphragm or flow-through.
- Sand prefilter, e.g., Cintropur NW25. Before the iron remover, a cartridge with a precision of several dozen microns works better than 5 µm, which quickly clogs at high iron levels. See also pipe filters.
- Iron / manganese remover: in Supreme OXYLINE, aeration takes place in the column, in Ecowater eXPERT Oxy 700 through an injector.
- Water softener, if the water is hard. With a multifunctional station, points 3 and 4 are replaced by one device.
- Next steps according to the analysis, e.g., an activated carbon filter or UV lamp for disinfection.
- Kitchen filtration, e.g., reverse osmosis for drinking and cooking water.
In Supreme OXYLINE, there is no need to add an external aerator, because the air cushion is formed inside the tank. Water before a multifunctional station is usually not aerated. The UV lamp should operate on clear water: lamp manufacturers usually require iron below 0.3 mg/l and manganese below 0.05 mg/l, so it is installed after the iron remover. UV does not remove either iron or sediment.
10. What to check before installing the iron remover?
- Pump capacity during flushing. The column must receive the required flow throughout the entire flushing process. A weak pump will not clean the bed, and after a few months, sediment will start passing into the system.
- Operating pressure. Supreme OXYLINE operates in the range of 2.5–8.6 bar, so the pump start threshold should not fall below 2.5 bar. Ecowater eXPERT Oxy 700 has a maximum pressure of 5.5 bar; at higher pressure, a pressure reducer is needed.
- Pressure tank. Supreme OXYLINE works with diaphragm and flow-through pressure tanks. Do not use aeration in the pressure tank before the multifunctional station.
- Brine disposal. Flushing produces water with iron sediment, and the multifunctional station also produces brine. Sewerage is not a problem, but with a septic tank or home treatment plant, check if it will accept this volume and brine.
- Technical room. OXYLINE columns are 1520–2110 mm high, eXPERT Oxy 700 is 1580 mm. An electrical outlet, access to the controller, and a temperature of at least 4 °C are required.
- Service. Plan a bypass, shut-off valves, and sampling taps before and after the iron remover.
How to check pump capacity without a flow meter?
Fully open the tap or valve closest to the installation site and measure how many seconds it takes to fill a 10 l bucket while the pump is running. You will calculate the flow in m³/h by dividing 36 by the measured time in seconds. Example: 10 l in 20 s is 1.8 m³/h, which is what OXYLINE42 PLUS needs for flushing. The measurement is approximate, because during flushing, the water also overcomes the bed resistance, so leave a margin.
It is best to commission the installation to a contractor who will check the hydraulic conditions, start the device, and set the flushing to the water parameters. For installation and service, contact CzystyStyl; service availability depends on the location and scope of work.
11. How much does a home iron remover and its operation cost?
Approximate gross prices at CzystyStyl (October 2026):
- Supreme OXYLINE PLUS: from 3660 PLN (OXYLINE28 PLUS) to 5490 PLN (OXYLINE85 PLUS).
- Multifunctional stations for well water: from 2950 PLN (Aquaphor S550) to 6280 PLN (Ecosoft Titanium Gold 370).
- Ecowater eXPERT Oxy 700: ask about the price.
- Accessories: OXYLINE bypass valve 149 PLN, angled connection 80 PLN, Cintropur NW25 prefilter from 380.50 PLN.
You will find current prices in the water iron remover category. Add laboratory testing, mounting elements, and installation with startup to the budget.
A salt-free iron remover does not require buying salt or oxidizers, but it is not free. It uses water for flushing and electricity to power the controller and pump, and needs a service every now and then. The multifunctional station additionally consumes tablet salt. The annual cost depends on the model, the amount of iron, and the frequency of flushing, so we do not provide a single amount for everyone.
Supreme OXYLINE PLUS iron removers are covered by the MULTIRABATY promotion. The discount is calculated automatically in the cart according to the number of promotional products and applies to the cheapest of them, not the entire order value. Details are specified in the promotion terms.
12. Most common mistakes in iron removal and why water is still sometimes rusty
- Purchase without water testing. Color will tell you nothing about the form of iron, pH, or organic substances.
- Selection based on the number of residents. Too low operating flow will make itself felt when the shower, washing machine, and dishwasher are running at the same time.
- Ignoring the pump requirements for flushing. Good pressure in the taps does not mean that the pump will flush the bed.
- Treating a softener like an iron remover. A regular softener has a different task; the exception is multifunctional stations selected according to the analysis.
- Too dense a prefilter before the iron remover. With high iron, a 5 µm cartridge clogs in a few days and chokes the flow.
- Ignoring pH, manganese, and organic compounds. A bed effective in one well does not have to work the same in another.
- Aerating water before the ion exchange station. Precipitated iron contaminates the bed and shortens its life.
- Belief in magnetic devices. They do not remove iron from water.
- Lack of control after installation. If sediment appears after the filter, check the flushing settings, pressure, pump capacity, bed condition, and pipe corrosion.
If the problem does not disappear after startup, compare the results of samples taken before the device and after it. This will determine whether the source of sediment is the raw water, the filter operation, or the further installation.
13. Most frequently asked questions
Can you drink well water with elevated iron?
Iron itself up to about 2 mg/l is not considered a health hazard, but it worsens the taste and color of the water. Whether the water can be drunk is decided by a full physicochemical and microbiological analysis, because the well may also contain manganese, nitrates, or bacteria.
How does a chemical-free iron remover work?
“Chemical-free” means that no reagents need to be added for operation and flushing: salt, chlorine, or potassium permanganate. The oxidizer is oxygen from the air, and in catalytic beds, such as Katalox Light in Supreme OXYLINE PLUS, manganese dioxide on granules acts as a catalyst: it accelerates the reaction, but is not consumed in it. The resulting sediment is retained by the bed, and it is removed by automatic backwashing. In Supreme OXYLINE, the air creates a cushion inside the tank, in Ecowater eXPERT Oxy 700 it is supplied by an injector. For comparison, Greensand-type beds need to be regenerated with potassium permanganate.
How does Supreme OXYLINE differ from OXYLINE PLUS?
Both series use an air cushion in the column and have the same rated flows. OXYLINE PLUS operates on a light Katalox Light bed, has a wider bed operating pH range (5.8–10.0 compared to 6.8–9.0), and needs less water for flushing. The PLUS series also has larger models, with 84.5 and 113 l beds.
What iron remover should I choose for well water?
For iron and manganese alone, choose an iron remover with aeration, e.g., Supreme OXYLINE PLUS or Ecowater eXPERT Oxy 700. If the water is also hard or contains ammonium ions, consider a multifunctional station. Select the size according to the flow in the home and pump capacity.
Does the iron remover work with a diaphragm pressure tank?
Supreme OXYLINE does: aeration takes place in the column, so the water in the pressure tank does not have to come into contact with air. The manufacturer provides operation with diaphragm and flow-through pressure tanks.
Does a water softener remove iron and manganese?
A regular softener will only retain small amounts of dissolved iron and loses capacity through it over time. Multifunctional stations, e.g., with an ECOMIX bed, are designed to remove iron and manganese within the range specified by the manufacturer.
Will the iron remover remove the smell of rotten eggs?
The Supreme OXYLINE series reduces hydrogen sulfide, and in large amounts, an additional air exchange between regenerations can be set. If the smell is strong, test the H₂S concentration, because it determines the choice of technology.
Does the iron remover need salt?
No. Supreme OXYLINE and Ecowater eXPERT Oxy 700 flush the bed with water alone. Salt is only needed in multifunctional stations that also soften the water.
How often does the iron remover flush the bed?
The installer sets the frequency based on the iron concentration and water consumption: the more iron, the more often. The time-volume controller starts flushing automatically, usually at night.
How much does a home iron remover cost?
At CzystyStyl, Supreme OXYLINE PLUS iron removers cost from 3660 to 5490 PLN gross, and multifunctional stations for well water from 2950 to 6280 PLN (October 2026). Water testing and installation are added to this.
How long does the bed last?
The manufacturer estimates the lifespan of ECOMIX A and C media to be around 5 years. The catalytic media in iron removal systems wear out slowly, and their replacement is determined by the quality of the water after the filter.
Does reverse osmosis remove iron from water?
Osmosis works at a single point of use and does not protect the plumbing system. At high iron concentrations, the membrane quickly becomes clogged: iron oxidizes on its surface and forms a deposit that reduces filter performance and shortens the membrane's lifespan. Therefore, with well water, reverse osmosis is installed after the iron removal system as the final stage of water treatment for drinking.
Can a UV lamp replace an iron removal system?
No. UV disinfects water, but it does not remove iron, manganese, or hardness. For it to work effectively, the water must be iron-removed beforehand.
What should I do if only the hot water is yellow?
Check the water heater, anode, and hot water system. A sample of cold water taken before the devices will help distinguish between a well problem and a plumbing problem.
Summary: start with the test results
Rusty water, black deposits, and a metallic taste are problems that can be permanently eliminated, but the technology is chosen based on the water composition. Iron, manganese, pH, hardness, organic compounds, and pump capacities must be assessed together. For iron and manganese alone, an aeration iron removal system works best, e.g., Supreme OXYLINE PLUS without salt and chemicals, or the Ecowater eXPERT Oxy 700 with media selected based on the analysis. For hard water, a better choice will be a multifunctional station or an iron removal system combined with a water softener.
