What exactly is a water softener?
A water softener is a device installed at the main water inlet to a building that removes calcium and magnesium, the minerals responsible for hardness. Unlike point-of-use solutions – an anti-limescale filter for a washing machine and dishwasher or a shower filter, which protect a single appliance or a single tap – a softener works on the entire installation at once. The water that goes into the boiler, washing machine, dishwasher, bathroom taps, and shower is already soft.
This is the only method with decades of proven effectiveness that actually removes hardness ions, rather than just changing their crystallization method (like magnetic reducers) or acting on a single point (like an anti-limescale filter for one appliance). How a softener works – ion exchange step-by-step
The operating principle is based on ion exchange. Inside the softener is a tank filled with ion-exchange resin – thousands of porous beads that are initially "charged" with sodium ions.
When hard water flows through the media, the resin "holds" calcium ions (Ca²⁺) and magnesium ions (Mg²⁺) more strongly than sodium ions, so it retains them on its surface and, in return, releases sodium into the water. At the outlet of the device, we have the same water, only with a different pair of ions.
The media has a limited capacity. When all "sites" on its surface are occupied, the device stops softening the water and must undergo regeneration – a process of reversing this reaction using brine. Softener construction: what it consists of
- Ion exchange column (pressure vessel) – a tank filled with ion-exchange resin, the most important element of the device. Good quality media have a hygiene certificate for contact with drinking water – it is worth checking this before purchase.
- Control head – the "brain" of the device, which controls the regeneration process. Popular, proven head brands (e.g., Clack, Fleck, Autotrol, Erie) have widely available spare parts, so a breakdown does not mean replacing the entire device.
- Tablet salt tank – in compact softeners (cabinet), it is part of one housing together with the ion exchange column.
- Bypass valve – allows setting the so-called residual hardness at the outlet, instead of completely demineralizing the water. Important, for example, for copper installations.
- Distribution system and connection ports – supply hard water, discharge soft water, and direct backwash water to the sewage system during regeneration.

Regeneration is the moment when the softener regains its ability to continue working. Brine flows through the media, flushing out calcium and magnesium, and in their place, re-saturating the resin with sodium. The entire process usually takes 60–120 minutes and is programmed for nighttime hours.

How to choose the right size softener for your home
A softener that is too small regenerates too often, which accelerates wear of the head and increases salt and water consumption. A softener that is too large means unnecessarily high purchase costs. The selection is based on four variables:
- Incoming water hardness – the higher it is, the faster the media capacity is depleted. How to check it is described in the article How to check water hardness at home?
- Number of household members and daily water consumption – more people mean more frequent regeneration cycles.
- Amount of resin in the device – larger tanks regenerate less frequently than small, compact models.
- Target regeneration frequency – for a single-family home, about two regenerations per month are optimal.
Water from your own well? A hardness test alone is not enough
If you use tap water, its quality is subject to constant sanitary inspections. The situation is completely different with your own water source – a deep well or a dug well, where no one checks the water composition for you, and a hardness test alone will only show one parameter.
- Safety. Nitrates, bacteria, or certain heavy metals have no taste or smell and show no visible symptoms, but can pose a real health risk.
- Device parameter selection. Iron and manganese, common in water from deep wells, are not removed during standard brine regeneration – they gradually "coat" the media and reduce its effective working surface. An ordinary softener selected solely based on hardness can lose efficiency within a few months. In such cases, a multifunctional station with media adapted to remove these compounds and a different calculation of regeneration frequency is needed.

Softener and health: sodium, skin, hair
It is worth dispelling a common myth: softened water is not "sterilized" of minerals. The process only removes calcium and magnesium, replacing them with sodium – other components (chlorides, fluorides, sulfates) remain unchanged. Very soft water can increase the risk of copper corrosion in some installations. The solution is a bypass valve: it allows a residual hardness of about 3–4°dH to remain in the water, which protects the copper installation while eliminating most sediment problems.

Regeneration backwash water enters the sewage system as a solution containing primarily water and salt. The impact of such a discharge on a home wastewater treatment plant depends on its type, design, and the amount of salt and water consumed during regeneration. Particular caution should be exercised in the case of biological wastewater treatment plants, where the composition and amount of incoming wastewater can affect the work of microorganisms.
Softener in an apartment – does it even make sense?
This is one of the most frequently searched questions on Google in the context of fighting hard water in apartment buildings. So let's answer honestly: installing a softener in an apartment is a more difficult and often more expensive investment than in a single-family home. It requires finding space and connecting to the sewage system, and if the building is supplied by the municipal network and you only install the device for cold water, you will not get completely soft water "in every tap" anyway. Nevertheless, for people who genuinely suffer from the effects of hard water – such as limescale on fixtures, shower deposits, or dry skin – it is a perfectly sensible solution and is being chosen more and more often.
Why is an apartment different from a house?
The main problem is that a water softener is not installed on the hot water line. Ion exchange resin and control head components are designed to work with cold water, and high temperature from the network simply damages them. An individual softener in an apartment therefore treats all the cold water that flows into it: that for the washing machine, dishwasher, toilet, and for drinking.
However, you will not get perfectly soft water (close to 0°dH) throughout the entire installation, because during bathing, the treated cold water mixes with hard hot water in the tap.
If you want to completely soften the building's installation, including hot water supplied from outside, the only fully effective solution is a central water treatment plant. It is installed at the main entrance of the installation to the entire block, before the branching to the heat exchanger room. However, this requires an appropriate budget and is a decision made at the level of the housing community or cooperative, not an individual tenant.

If you only care about clean drinking and cooking water, and not about protecting the entire installation, a reverse osmosis system under the sink might be a better starting point – it takes up less space and doesn't require salt.
How to care for a softener to make it last 10 years
- Use only tablet salt compliant with standard PN-EN 973. Salt in other forms (e.g., rock salt) dissolves unevenly and increases the risk of salt bridging.
- Do not fill salt to the brim. The recommended level is about ¼ to ¾ of the tank height.
- Make sure the salt doesn't run out – its absence means incomplete regeneration and allowing hard water into the installation.
- Schedule an annual service inspection and, if the manufacturer recommends, chemical cleaning of the media.
- Install a mechanical filter before the softener – its absence usually means loss of manufacturer's warranty.
