Pre-filters (in-line filters) – The First Line of Defense for Your Home

Before you even think about water softening or drinking tap water, you need to lay the groundwork. Water from the municipal network and from your own well often carries so-called mechanical impurities: sand, rust from pipes, silt, and suspended solids. If left unchecked, they can damage household fittings, clog aerators, destroy washing machines, and lead to serious failures of expensive water treatment stations. An in-line filter is the simplest yet most crucial element of a water installation. At CzystyStyl, we offer proven solutions from industry pioneers such as Honeywell, Cintropur, Aquaphor, Ecosoft, Philips, and Ecowater.

How it works and where is it installed?

In-line filters are installed at the very beginning of the building's water supply system – right after the main valve and water meter (or after the hydrophore tank in the case of a private well). All water entering the house flows through them, protecting every pipe, faucet, and appliance from the outset.

Two main types of filters – which to choose?

Depending on your budget and needs, you can choose one of two popular solutions:

  • Screen filters with backwash (Reusable):
This is a Premium class, mainly represented by brands such as Honeywell (Resideo), Cintropur, or selected models from Philips and Ecowater. They have a built-in stainless steel or special nylon mesh that traps dirt.
Advantage: You don't need to buy new cartridges. When the filter gets dirty, you open the valve at the bottom, and a stream of water flushes the contaminants into a bucket or the sewer.
  • Housings for replaceable cartridges (e.g., Big Blue / 10 inch):
The most popular solution in Poland, offered by Ecosoft or Aquaphor. These are durable housings into which you insert inexpensive foam (polypropylene) or string cartridges.
Advantage: Very high filtration accuracy (up to 1 micron). When the cartridge turns dark with dirt, you simply replace it with a new one (usually every 3-6 months). Ideal for heavily sandy water.
Big Blue in-line filters installed in a home boiler room
A set of in-line filters at the water inlet guarantees clean pipes and a long lifespan for household appliances.

Protection for water softeners

If you are planning to purchase a water softener or a multi-functional station, a pre-filter is not an option – it is an absolute requirement. Sand and rust particles act like sandpaper on the precise pistons in softener heads. An appropriate in-line housing before the device guarantees compliance with the manufacturer's warranty.

Frequently asked questions

  • One filter will capture the largest dirt, but many homes use cascade systems (2 or 3 housings connected in series).
    Example of an ideal cascade:

    1. 20 micron mechanical cartridge (captures coarse sand and rust).
    2. 5 micron mechanical cartridge (captures fine dust).
    3. Carbon cartridge (improves taste and removes chlorine).
Such a system is the most effective and, paradoxically, cheaper to maintain (cartridges clog slower).
  • Both types work similarly but differ in construction.

    • Foam cartridges (polypropylene): Work both superficially and in depth. They are very effective at trapping fine impurities and are usually the cheapest.
    • String-wound cartridges: Allow water to pass through faster with slightly less pressure loss. They are better for water containing many larger particles (e.g., coarse sand), as dirt settles between the string windings.
  • The average lifespan of a foam/string filter cartridge is 3 to 6 months. However, everything depends on water quality. If the cartridge is completely brown or black after a month, and the water pressure in the taps has noticeably dropped, it should be replaced sooner. For the first housing, we always recommend transparent housings so you can visually assess the degree of contamination.

  • Big Blue is an industry standard name for very thick and large in-line housings (most commonly 10-inch or 20-inch in height). They are much thicker than standard household housings. They have a much higher flow rate, which means that if you turn on the water in the shower and in the kitchen at the same time, you will not feel a drop in pressure in your home.

  • Filters such as Honeywellor Cintropurare extremely easy to clean. Simply place a bucket underneath (or connect a pipe to the sewage system) and open the drain valve at the bottom of the device for a few seconds. Under pressure, water will wash away dirt from the mesh. It is advisable to perform this action preventively once a month.

  • A well-chosen filter should not noticeably reduce pressure. The problem arises when you install a small filter (10" standard) to serve a large house, or when the cartridge becomes severely clogged. To minimize pressure drops for an entire single-family home, we always recommend large housings such as Big Blue (10BB or 20BB).
